After Dr. Kim performs a dental exam. A dental X ray will be done to determine the extent of damage and bone levels. Once Dr. Kim has all the information needed, he will be discussing your treatment and sedation options.

Why is tooth extraction necessary?

Tooth extraction is necessary to eliminate unhealthy bacteria that may cause infection throughout your body. In addition, extracting a tooth relieves discomfort caused by the harmful bacteria growth and damage to your gums.

Is tooth extraction pain-free?

No, you will not feel any pain during a tooth extraction because Dr. Kim administers a local anesthetic. It’s perfectly normal to feel pressure from the instruments at times. However, if you do start to feel any pain, Dr. Kim will give you another dose of local anesthetic to make you more comfortable.

What if I don’t want my tooth removed?

Several serious conditions may happen if you choose not to have your tooth extracted. These include the following:

  • Infection of the oral cavity and bloodstream
  • Extreme pain, discomfort, and increased sensitivity
  • Dental abscess
  • Nerve damage

Do dentists extract infected teeth?

Yes, with advanced infections, dentists have no choice but to remove infected teeth to prevent further spread. However, most dentists prefer to try and save infected teeth using alternative treatments like root canal therapy before resorting to tooth extraction.

How long does a tooth extraction take?

A single tooth extraction can take between 20 to 40 minutes to complete. A surgical extraction on the other hand, may take longer.

How long does the pain last after a tooth extraction?

The pain that sets in after a tooth extraction usually lasts between 1 to 3 days. In some cases, sensitive patients may experience discomfort for up to 1 week. But don’t worry, Dr. Kim will always prescribe pain relievers to make you comfortable as you recover.

What to expect after a tooth extraction?

After a tooth extraction, Dr Kim will apply gauze on the site of tooth extraction. He will ask you to gently bite down on the gauze with enough pressure to help reduce the bleeding. Light bleeding is a normal occurrence within the first 24 hours after the procedure. If you experience heavy bleeding at any point, call your dentist immediately.
