Repair your teeth with dental fillings at First Dental Care
Any damage to your teeth needs to be fixed immediately. Untreated cavities, in particular, can cause other health problems if left untreated. Broken teeth can affect the way you chew or speak and the sharp area can cause other oral injuries. At First Dental Care, we offer long-lasting dental fillings to restore tooth function.
What are the different types of dental filling?
- Composite: While this material takes longer to apply, the color matches your teeth giving the best cosmetic result.
- Ceramic: In addition to looking natural, ceramic fillings can last up to 15 years and are also stain-resistant.
- Glass ionomer: This material is typically used to fill areas below the gumline. It also releases fluoride which prevents further tooth decay.
- Amalgam: Often called as "silver fillings" because of their appearance, amalgam fillings are also affordable and durable.
*Although there are many types of dental fillings, we only offer amalgam and composite at First Dental Care.
What should I expect during my dental filling procedure?
A dental filling procedure starts off with Dr. Kim numbing your affected tooth. If you are getting a filling for a cavity, he will use a drill to gently remove the decayed part of the tooth. For fillings to repair a broken tooth, Dr. Kim will smoothen the sharp edges.
The next step is to apply the filling on the tooth. Depending on your choice of dental filling material, the application time can vary. Lastly, Dr. Kim will polish the tooth, periodically asking you if it feels natural. It takes a couple of days to get used to the filling and for the sensitivity to wear off.
Does it hurt to get a dental filling?
A dental filling procedure shouldn’t hurt. Dr. Kim is very careful with the instruments he uses. He will also constantly check in on you to make sure you are comfortable. After the procedure, you may experience more sensitivity on your newly-filled tooth, but this is temporary.
How long do dental fillings last?
Dental fillings last between 5-15 years, depending on the material you choose and your oral hygiene practices.
Do I really need a dental filling?
Not all teeth that have a cavity need a filling. After an initial inspection and an X-ray, Dr. Kim will determine whether you need a dental filling. If a cavity is caught early and hasn’t reached your dentin, you may not need a dental filling.
